Time to raid those basement files.
The AMRC board is planning to mark the organization’s 20th anniversary year and is looking for help
in particular from the “seasoned” members, but also from those who have joined in the years since the old days.
It was in 1987 that representatives of the relatively few recycling programs in Ontario started getting together
informally to compare notes and support each other. Those meetings gradually became more regular and more formalized.
Then a desk was set up in the corner of a City of Mississauga office.
The “office” then moved to the living room of Cynthia Hyland—our first employee. The newsletter was born in 1990. The organization became incorporated, an executive director (Linda Varangu) was hired and then moved to Ortech in Mississauga,
The AMRC moved to Guelph in 1992. It has moved three times since then, but never more than a few yards.
Waterloo’s Kim Kidd Kitagawa is currently gathering old photographs, agendas and other memorabilia from those early days of the AMRC,
as well as from the days in between.
“They will be rolled into a dynamic visual presentation set to music that will capture
and celebrate the start and phenomenal growth of the AMRC,” she said.
“We will also celebrate the interesting sometimes eccentric or unconventional professionals that made it all happen!”
“I am hoping that it will give members a sense of just how far we've come—and how vital and effective all of our efforts are in the industry,” said Ms Kidd Kitagawa.
The presentation will run during receptions at the 2006 AMRC Spring Workshop.
